Ahmedabad Dholera Expressway four-lane carriageway near Dholera SIR
We have been driving down to Dholera since 2018. Back then, the trip meant a slow crawl through Bavla and Dhandhuka, dodging tractors and village traffic. The Ahmedabad Dholera Expressway has changed that daily reality for anyone who visits, works or invests here.
This guide pulls together everything you actually need: the route, the distance, the toll, who built which stretch, and how the road connects to the airport and Bhavnagar. We have also added our own notes from the drive. And because you are deciding where to put your money, we cover the risks too, not just the good news.
Ahmedabad Dholera Expressway at a glance

Here are the basic facts in one place. Wherever a detail is still being confirmed by the authorities, we have marked it clearly rather than guessed.
| Feature | Details |
| Length | 109.019 km |
| Type | Access-controlled greenfield expressway |
| Lanes | 4 lanes, expandable to 8 |
| Start point | Sarkhej, on Sardar Patel (SP) Ring Road, Ahmedabad |
| End point | Adhelai village, Bhavnagar district |
| Passes through | Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR) |
| Owner / operator | National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) |
| Model | EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) |
| DPR prepared by | SMEC India |
| Construction cost | About ₹3,196–3,500 crore |
| Total project cost | About ₹5,800 crore (reported by NBMCW, March 2026) |
| Opening | Opened for testing Feb–Mar 2026; inaugurated 31 March 2026 |
| Expressway number | NE-8 |
A quick word on the cost, because people often get confused by the two numbers. The four construction contracts add up to roughly ₹3,196 crore, which is the cost of building the road itself. The larger figure of about ₹5,800 crore is the reported total project cost, which most likely includes land acquisition and other pre-construction expenses
Ahmedabad Dholera Expressway route map
Ahmedabad Dholera Expressway route map from Sarkhej to Adhelai
The route begins at Sarkhej, on the south-western edge of Ahmedabad, where it meets the Sardar Patel Ring Road. That matters because the ring road connects to most parts of the city, so you can join the expressway without crossing central Ahmedabad.
From Sarkhej, the road heads south-west through open farmland on a completely new alignment. It is a greenfield road, which means it was built on fresh land instead of widening an old highway. It then passes the Dholera SIR and continues to its end point at Adhelai village in Bhavnagar district.
The exact villages, interchanges and chainages along the way are listed in NHAI’s official documents. For the authoritative alignment, check the National Highways Authority of India website
Reading the Ahmedabad Dholera Expressway route map

When you look at the official map, focus on three points: the Sarkhej start, the Dholera exits and the Adhelai end. Everything else is detail. If you are visiting a plot, ask your developer which exit is nearest to it before you leave Ahmedabad.
One more tip from our own trips. Save the start point on your phone’s map as “Sarkhej, SP Ring Road” before you set off, because the Ahmedabad Dholera Expressway entry can be easy to miss if you are coming from the north of the city. Once you are on it, the road is simple to follow all the way down.
Construction packages: who built which stretch
NHAI split the 109 km into four packages so that work could run in parallel. Here is how the work was divided.
| Package | Length | Contractor | Contract value |
| Package 1 | 22 km | Sadbhav Engineering | ₹690.30 crore |
| Package 2 | 26.52 km | Sadbhav Engineering | ₹882 crore |
| Package 3 | 22.54 km | GHV India | ₹692 crore |
| Package 4 | 38.019 km | MKC Infrastructure | ₹932.22 crore |
| Total | 109.079 km | ₹3,196.52 crore |
You will notice the package lengths add up to slightly more than the official 109.019 km. Small gaps like this usually come from how overlaps are counted between packages, but we have flagged it for confirmation.
Dholera to Ahmedabad distance

This is the question we hear most often on site visits. The honest answer is that the Dholera to Ahmedabad distance depends on where in Ahmedabad you start and which route you take.
Dholera distance from Ahmedabad by road
Remember that the full expressway is 109 km, but it ends at Adhelai, beyond Dholera. So the Dholera distance from Ahmedabad on the expressway is shorter than the full length. We will update the table once the exact exit-to-exit figure is confirmed.
Dholera express highway vs the old route
Many people still search for the “Dholera express highway”, and they usually mean the same new road. The older option is the state highway through Bavla and Dhandhuka, which passes through towns, markets and village junctions. It still works, but it is slower and far less predictable.
For daily use, the choice is clear. The Ahmedabad Dholera Expressway gives you a fixed, signal-free drive, while the old state highway is now best kept as a backup if there is an accident or closure. Whether you call it the Dholera express highway or the expressway, it is the same 109 km road.
If you are driving back from Dholera to Ahmedabad in the evening, the expressway is also the safer bet. Fewer crossings and no slow-moving farm traffic make a real difference after dark.
Dholera to Ahmedabad by rail (coming later)
There is no train to Dholera yet. In May 2026, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved a 134 km Ahmedabad (Sarkhej)–Dholera semi high-speed rail line at a cost of ₹20,667 crore. You can read more about the plans for the Dholera railway station in our separate update.
Toll rates and entry/exit points
Toll is collected at plazas along the route, as on other NHAI expressways. The official rates for cars, LCVs, buses and trucks are notified by NHAI and can change from year to year.
Since it is access-controlled, you cannot join or leave the road just anywhere. You use the designated interchanges only, which is exactly why the road stays fast and safe. Keep your FASTag recharged before you start.
We will add the confirmed toll table for the Ahmedabad Dholera Expressway here as soon as NHAI’s notice is verified. Until then, please don’t rely on toll figures shared on social media or WhatsApp forwards, as they are often outdated.
Timeline: from idea to opening
| Year | Milestone |
| 2010 | Expressway first proposed to connect Ahmedabad with the Dholera region |
| July 2020 | Land acquisition completed |
| November 2020 | Construction contracts awarded |
| Feb–Mar 2026 | Opened to the public for testing |
| 31 March 2026 | Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi |
| May 2026 | CCEA approves Sarkhej–Dholera semi high-speed rail |
From contract award to opening took a little over five years. That is longer than many people expected in 2020, which is a useful reminder: infrastructure timelines in India often slip.
The good part is that the Ahmedabad Dholera Expressway did finish, and it is now carrying real traffic. That gives buyers something concrete to judge, instead of a line on a master plan.
How the expressway links Dholera airport, Dholera SIR and Bhavnagar

Dholera Ahmedabad Expressway and the SIR
The road runs right past the Dholera SIR, the 920-odd sq km industrial region planned under the Delhi–Mumbai Industrial Corridor . For the city, this is the main road artery. In simple terms, the Dholera Ahmedabad Expressway is what lets a worker, a supplier or a visitor treat Dholera as a day trip from Ahmedabad. The Dholera activation area, where most current construction is happening, is the part closest to the expressway corridor.
The airport connection
Dholera’s new airport is being built in the region the road serves. Whether there is a dedicated airport interchange, and how far it is from the nearest exit, still needs official confirmation For the latest work progress, see our page on the Dholera International Airport latest status.
City residents will also have a second option in future. Read about the proposed Ahmedabad Metro Phase 3 route towards the airport.
Onward to Bhavnagar
Because the road ends at Adhelai in Bhavnagar district, it also makes Bhavnagar much easier to reach from Ahmedabad. That opens a link to the coast and to the proposed Bhavnagar port, which could matter for industries that come up in Dholera.
What the drive is like: our team’s experience
We drive this road almost every week with clients, so here is what it actually feels like.
Driving tips for first-timers
- Start early. Leaving Ahmedabad before city traffic builds up makes the Sarkhej entry much easier.
- Fill fuel and carry water. Wayside facilities on new expressways usually take time to come up fully
- Respect the speed limit. It is tempting to push on an empty road, but posted limits apply and are enforced .
- Plan your exit. Know which interchange you need before you reach it, since you cannot take a U-turn.
For NRIs flying into Ahmedabad, this also means you can land, see your plot and be back in the city for dinner on the same day. That is something we could not honestly say a few years ago.
What the Ahmedabad Dholera Expressway means for plot buyers

Let’s be straight with you here. A good road is necessary for a new city, but a road alone does not build one.
The benefits
- Easier site visits. A short, predictable drive means you can visit your plot from Ahmedabad and return the same day without fuss.
- Better connectivity for future residents and businesses. Factories, offices and homes need reliable roads first, and the expressway is now a working fact rather than a promise.
- Links to other projects. The road ties in with the airport, the proposed rail line and the Bhavnagar side.
- Proof of delivery. The Ahmedabad Dholera Expressway is a completed, working road, not just a line on a plan, so you can see and use it before you decide.
The risks
- Land value depends on more than roads. Prices in any new city depend on jobs, industries actually starting, and people moving in. None of that is guaranteed by one expressway.
- Timelines can slip. The expressway itself took over five years after contracts were awarded. The airport, rail line and metro could also take longer than announced.
- Not every plot is “near” the expressway. Some projects advertise expressway proximity loosely. Check the actual road distance to the nearest interchange, not the distance to the road as the crow flies.
- Title and approvals matter more than location. Verify land title, NA (non-agricultural) status and approvals for any plot before paying.
We will not quote any appreciation figure, because nobody can honestly promise one. If you are exploring plots in Dholera Smart City, treat it as a long-term decision and do your own due diligence.
