Nearest Railway Station to Dholera Today
Today the nearest railway station to Dholera is Dhandhuka, on the Ahmedabad–Botad broad-gauge line. It is the closest by distance, but it has only a handful of daily trains. For most visitors, Ahmedabad is the more useful railhead, followed by a road transfer on the expressway. That will stay true until the first Dholera railway station opens inside the SIR.
| Station | Code | Approx. distance from Dholera SIR | Key trains towards Ahmedabad / Delhi |
| Dhandhuka | DCK | ~28 km by road from Dholera village | 20965/20966 Sabarmati–Bhavnagar Intercity (daily, about 2 hours to Gandhigram, Ahmedabad); Gandhigram–Botad passenger trains; a few weekly long-distance trains |
| Bhimnath | ~25 km | Limited halts this is where the new freight line branches off | |
| Bhavnagar Terminus | BVC | ~75–80 km | Intercity to Ahmedabad; long-distance trains to Mumbai and North India |
| Ahmedabad Junction (Kalupur) / Sabarmati | ADI / SBIB | ~110–125 km via expressway | Main option from Delhi: Rajdhani and other daily expresses |
What this means in practice: if you are coming from Delhi, Mumbai or Jaipur, book to Ahmedabad and drive down the Ahmedabad Dholera Expressway, which opened on 31 March 2026. Dhandhuka is the Dholera nearest railway station on paper, but its timetable rarely suits outstation travellers.
Ahmedabad–Dholera Semi High Speed Rail (Approved May 2026)

On 13 May 2026 the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the Ahmedabad (Sarkhej)–Dholera semi high-speed double line. The news was widely reported on 13–14 May 2026. It is Indian Railways’ first semi high-speed project built on indigenous technology, and it is the project that will finally give the SIR a proper Dholera railway station.
| Detail | Ahmedabad Dholera semi high speed rail |
| Route | Sarkhej (Ahmedabad) to Dholera |
| Length | About 134 km, double line |
| Cost | About ₹20,667 crore |
| Approved by | CCEA chaired by PM Narendra Modi, 13 May 2026 |
| Speed | 200 km/h operating speed reported; officials have cited 220 km/h on broad gauge |
| Travel time | About 48 minutes, Sarkhej to Dholera (Ministry of Railways) |
| Stations | 13 planned, with about 7 inside Dholera SIR; final station names |
| Structure | About 74 km elevated, including 3 mega bridges |
| Spur lines | Dholera Airport terminal and Lothal National Maritime Heritage Complex |
| Interchanges | Sabarmati (bullet train), Ahmedabad metro integration and a freight corridor link near Sanand [VERIFY final points] |
| Contract | EPC tender of about ₹18,901.68 crore floated by Western Railway, 42-month completion period |
| Target | 2030–31 |
Two details matter for buyers. First, the Ahmedabad Dholera semi high speed rail runs alongside the expressway in a 30 m strip that was reserved years ago, which reduces land acquisition risk, the usual cause of rail delays in India. Second, the line extends beyond a single terminal: the spurs to the airport and Lothal mean the network will have several stops inside and around the SIR rather than one Dholera railway station at the edge of it.
A further extension of the line towards Bhavnagar has been reported as under survey.
Bhimnath–Dholera Rail Line
The Bhimnath Dholera rail line is the older, smaller and mainly freight-focused project. It was planned under the Delhi–Mumbai Industrial Corridor to give Dholera’s industries a direct link to the national freight network.
| Detail | Bhimnath–Dholera line |
| Route | Bhimnath (on the Ahmedabad–Botad line) to the Dholera logistics hub |
| Length | About 23.33 km, new broad-gauge line |
| Sanction | ₹466 crore, sanctioned by the Centre (reported July 2024) |
| Executing agency | Western Railway (Bhavnagar division) |
| Civil works | Tender of about ₹252 crore floated in 2024 |
| Purpose | Mainly freight; links Dholera to the Dedicated Freight Corridor network |
| Completion | December 2029 |
The Dholera SIR authority describes this line as under implementation. We could not find an official completion date, so treat any date you hear with caution. The project was first surveyed more than a decade ago and moved slowly until the 2024 sanction.
You may also see a separate 65 km Bhavnagar–Dholera line mentioned online, with a survey reported in January 2026.
How Rail, Expressway, Airport and Metro Connect Dholera
Rail is one of four connectivity layers. Here is where each stands in October 2026.
| Mode | Project | Status (Oct 2026) | What it gives you |
| Road | Ahmedabad–Dholera Expressway (109 km) | Open since 31 March 2026 | The fastest way in today |
| Air | Dholera International Airport | About 80% complete in July 2026; operations targeted September–October 2026 | Domestic flights and cargo |
| Rail (passenger) | Sarkhej–Dholera semi high speed line | Approved; EPC tender stage | ~48-minute rail link, target 2030–31 |
| Rail (freight) | Bhimnath–Dholera line | Sanctioned; under implementation | Freight access for industry |
| Metro | Ahmedabad Metro Phase 3 route | PIB-cleared; viaduct tenders floated October 2026 | Ends at Badrabad near the expressway; a Dholera extension is only proposed |
Dholera Rail Project Timeline

| Date | Milestone |
| 2014 | Dholera–Bhimnath new line survey reported to Parliament |
| July 2024 | ₹466 crore sanctioned for the Bhimnath–Dholera line |
| August 2024 | Western Railway civil works tender for the Bhimnath line |
| 31 March 2026 | Ahmedabad–Dholera Expressway opens |
| 13 May 2026 | CCEA approves the semi high speed rail project |
| August–September 2026 | ₹18,901.68 crore EPC tender floated; pre-bid meetings held |
| 2030–31 | Target completion of the semi high speed line |
The pattern is clear: the dholera rail project with the most momentum today is the semi high speed line, because it has Cabinet approval, a cost, a target year and a live tender. It is also the line most likely to deliver the first passenger Dholera railway station.
What Rail Means for Plot Buyers – Benefits and Risks
Benefits
- Commuting becomes realistic. A train of under an hour to Ahmedabad changes Dholera from a weekend destination to a place people can live and work.
- Airport and rail together. The airport spur links two of the region’s biggest assets on one line.
- Industry gets freight access. The Bhimnath line and the freight corridor link support manufacturers in Dholera SIR, which drives jobs and housing demand.
- Port logistics. Combined with the planned Bhavnagar port, rail strengthens the cargo story for the Gulf of Khambhat region.
Risks
- Station locations are not yet public. Until the official station list is released, be wary of any seller charging a premium for a plot “next to the Dholera railway station”.
- Timelines slip. 2030–31 is a target. The Bhimnath line shows how long rail can take from survey to service.
- SIR boundary matters. The stations serve the SIR. Plots outside the notified boundary may gain less than advertised.
- Zoning decides value. Rail proximity helps only if your plot’s Town Planning zone allows the use you want.
